Standing on a high ground
dominating the Chiani river, Parrano is one of the areas of the Monte
Peglia Natural Park and the Selva di Meana. The floral varieties are
numerous in this region, estimated at 1000 species, many of them rare. The animal
varieties are also rich and include wild cats, hawks, the royal owl, and the rare
river crab. The natural treasure of the area possesses numerous paleontological
findings, such as the Prehistorical findings of Monte Peglia, which date
back to 700,000 years ago, one of the oldest in Italy. Fabro and Ficulle also
have fossil findings, such as the shells of the Pliocene era. In Parrano's valley
we find a canyon created by the flow of water during thousands of years. Here
one can find 20 caves of great archeological interest, called "The Devil's
Caves", dating back to the bronze era. The "Forra di Parrano"
is a canyon of calcified stone, where the Bagno stream flows between narrow walls,
creating small waterfalls and lakes. On the walls we can see the entrances to
the caves, where many archeological artifacts were found. The area includes some
cold and warm mineral springs which gave the name to the area of Mineral Baths
(Bagno Minerale). The calcified gorge has hydro-geological, archeological, botanical
and fauna. | | | | |
